The brand new film’s journalist and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a multidimensional chess online game, getting mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), an excellent cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) spent some time working on gambling establishment and you can dated a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic script, new cast’s suavely managed gestures out of like and you will risk, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may fashionably assertive photos (and additionally their political conscience) make this pugnacious yet outlined spectacle an invisible vintage of the category.” [ ten ]

Although the spot employs a familiar trend, brand new characterizations is fresh and also the shows sufficient so you can overbalance. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little woman exactly who brings out the brand new best in him and you will Ellen Drew ‘s the sleek and slinky vixen whom becomes him with the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty while the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does a different ready tour because the a weary cops inspector just who in the end closes the case.
